Molecular studies allow us to identify changes in nucleic acids, such as DNA, and proteins, responsible for the origin or development of different diseases.

These alterations are known as “Biomarkers” and are used for the understanding of different diseases for prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

  • Diagnostic Biomarkers: confirm the presence of a particular disease in the patient.
  • Prognostic Biomarkers: associated with the individual probability of survival or recurrence of the disease.
  • Predictive Biomarkers: predict the response to therapeutic treatments or drugs.

Biomarkers provide unique information for each patient, to adapt each therapy for each individual, laying the foundation of personalized medicine.
